Google Sitemaps (BETA) Help

The Sitemap Protocol allows you to inform search engine crawlers about URLs on your Web sites that are available for crawling. A Sitemap consists of a list of URLs and may also contain additional information about those URLs, such as when they were last modified, how frequently they change, etc.

Sitemaps are particularly beneficial when users can not reach all areas of a Web site through a browseable interface — i.e. users are unable to reach certain pages or regions of a site by following links. For example, any site where certain pages are only accessible via a search form would benefit from creating a Sitemap and submitting it to search engines.

This document describes the formats for Sitemap files and also explains where you should post your Sitemap files so that search engines can retrieve them.

Please note that the Sitemap Protocol supplements, but does not replace, the crawl-based mechanisms that search engines already use to discover URLs. By submitting a Sitemap (or Sitemaps) to a search engine, you will help that engine's crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.

Using this protocol does not guarantee that your Web pages will be included in search indexes. In addition, using this protocol may not influence the way your pages are ranked by a search engine.

Google Update Bourbon Part 4

Google Update Bourbon Part 4: "' that one way to flush them out is to tweak the algo to bring them to the forefront so they can be identified? ' 'Put yourself in google's mind. '

Granted I don't claim to be a PhD like some of Google's Folks (only a BS, Comp Sci) and I've only been programming professionally for some 23 years, but even I know you ALWAYS TEST things OFFLINE, in a simulated test-bed scenario before risking putting it out in a LIVE situation where it can cause collateral damage to others and embarassment to yourself. EVERY real company I've ever worked for has always done it that way.

You test it before it goes live AND you have a quick reversal contingency in place if something goes wrong. Even the military requires gov contractors to maintain a second independent system for beta testing new features and debugging old ones. You don't 'tweak' in the field when your profits are on the line and the customer is watching.

Apparently the datacenters are able to run a search independently and have their own copy of the database since they often have different data.

How much can one spare data-center cost compared to how much bad publicity and ill-will alone which they are creating.

Even without additional expenditures and using what they have on hand, they could very simply take one of the umpteen data-center's which they typically use in rotation and reserve it for their own use in DEBUGGING their algorithm BEFORE it GOES LIVE.
And only once it's perfect, upload all the data to the other sites.

Sorry, not convinced their method is sound.
So that leaves only two alternatives, Either it really IS broken and wasn't EXPECTED to act as it is, or they INTEND for these versions to get out for PUBLIC use/comment/feedback, or webmaster reaction, or to discourage the wrong element. That would be more plausible to me. Now on the other hand"

Google Watch

Google is dying: "Once upon a time Google's results made sense. Now they frequently display nothing more than Google's need to maintain a posture of relevance, while patching things together behind the scenes with ad hoc indexes. These extra indexes have one purpose, which is to keep the Google hype flying as high as their stock price. "

Cosmetic Changes at Google Precede Larger Overhaul

By Jim Hedger,
StepForth News Editor,
StepForth Placement Inc. (c) 2005

Google is undergoing some of the most sweeping changes in its short, seven year history. As of next week, Google will have finished sorting what might be its largest algorithm shift ever as the final points of the 3.5 part Bourbon Update were installed last Monday.

This update has been staggered into three and a half sections in order to avoid a massive amount of dislocation in established rankings as was seen in previous major updates. While changes stemming from the Bourbon Update have not actually manifested into a full reordering of Google's search engine results pages (SERPs), many individual webmasters have reported fairly significant losses or gains in ranking over the past few days."

Google Search: Bourbon Update google

The Bourbon update started around May 20th, 2005, and 10 days later has yet to settle down. This officially makes it the second longest update since Florida which lasted almost 20 days.

SEO DotComicide: Google Update Bourbon
Another point - Google is now showing the worse search results in it's history. There are some answers,
They were hacked
A virus has got inside
They have serious bugs they can't fix.
Human intervention has been dropping good quality sites ( eval ).

Whatever conspiracy theory you believe in, the point is that Google is currently broken and Yahoo is the best search engine on the internet at this point in time.

The question is - whatever happened can they fix it or is this the start of the biggest downfall from the most sucessful internet search engine ever?
