But the sales pitch obscures the true point of the tests, and even the fine print only hints at it. 23andMe wants customers to merge their genetic profiles with online personal health records like those Google has set up for people to track their medical information. Both Google and its cofounder Sergey Brin—who is married to 23andMe cofounder Anne Wojcicki and has a family history of Parkinson's—are big investors in the firm; marrying their customer data would enable 23andMe to pair clients' genetic data with their actual physical conditions. As it turns out, 23andMe's long-term revenue model has little to do with selling kits and everything to do with selling customer information to drugmakers and others in need of human guinea pigs for clinical research. The company hinted at this in July by calling for people with specific diseases to take part in an in-house study for no pay, other than a $300 price break on a personal genetic profile. 'We are the broker,' cofounder Linda Avey conceded to me in a recent interview. 'We make the connection between [the drug firms] and the individuals.'

To realize the dream of personalized medicine, pharmaceutical and biotech companies will need reliable clinical data on hundreds of thousands of people. Most diseases, after all, depend on the complex interplay of many genes and environmental factors. The New Jersey-based Coriell Institute for Medical Research, a nonprofit that shares biological materials with researchers, is already preparing for a large SNP study by recruiting 10,000 volunteers. It hopes to eventually attract 100,000, offering free genetic profiles in exchange for extensive personal and health information. A new company, TruGenetics, has also offered 10,000 free profiles, and plans to profit from selling the information it collects. 'When you get into predicting a future outcome, one needs that tightly controlled model,' explains David Speechly, a vice president for genomics research company Celera."

What Are Spam Blogs?

As with many powerful tools, blogging services can be both used and abused. The ease of creating and updating webpages with Blogger has made it particularly prone to a form of behavior known as link spamming. Working as a chef is a pretty time-consuming profession on its own. Could you tell us what writing your own novel while running a novel-writing headquarters might entail?

A: Well, since I spend all day talking too much to customers, 50,000 words doesn't sound too daunting. Darlington's noveling nirvana is situated at the In Arcadia Tarot Cafe in Darlington, in the north east of England. NaNoWriMo is proving to be very popular at In Arcadia! We now have 16 budding novelists, many of whom signed up at our mulled wine-fuelled Kick-Off Party last week.
In-Cafe discussions have included finding names for fictitious pubs, the links between vampirism and string theory, whether or not to include an as-of-yet unborn Zero-G kickboxing champion as a character, and whether me wearing my cow-shaped noveling hat contravenes Health and Safety rules in the cafe (I don't wear the hat, by the way, just in case). We're doing a special “bottomless coffee cup” for participants, but we're soon going to make it “motivational” coffee---you only get a refill after you've written"

"It was a dark and stormy night. The air was quiet. Too quiet. Yet stormy. Suddenly, a beep rang out from a bedside pager. The engineer woke up, grabbing a soda to sharpen his senses. Blogger was down. He needed to bring it back up.

When I get the chance to write my pulp story of a gritty Blogger engineer struggling to keep the site alive, I may look back on this past week as a prime source of choice dramatic fodder. Until then, I, like many of you, will look upon this past week with irritation, disappointment, and maybe even a bit of anger.

You need to look no further than our status blog or perhaps your own experiences to know that Blogger had a significant number of unplanned outages this last week (forgive me my euphemisms?) and a handful of planned ones to clean up from the unplanned ones. It’s been a Murphyesque cavalcade of power failures, fileserver trouble, and wonky network hardware, and I hope you’ll believe me when I say that the Blogger staff is even more sick of it than you are."

I would like to know if other webmasters have met the same
problem as me.

My web site is bilingual. It has roughly the same material and
the same presentation in French and English. I generate words
around names with a home-made software.

Because it is genealogy, names are the same in both versions. But
the text is different. However, Google is indexing only the French
version and not the English version. Both are cross-linked so a
visitor can jump to the other version, but many of them just don't
catch what "English version" means and continue to visit the French
version.

Hurricane Katrina Updates: "September 9, via e-mail from Ann Wakefield, Archivist, Notarial Archives: The Notarial Archives is housed in two facilities, both right next to the Superdome. We have been working desperately since Hurricane Katrina struck to rescue our documents. On Tuesday of this week, two staff members and a representative of Munters, a recovery contractor, were finally able to assess the damage and condition of the documents.
The 20th and 21st century records in our main office, located in the courthouse basement, experienced some flooding damage. Remarkably, the flood level in the basement reached only a couple of feet, much less than we expected to find. However, records on the bottom shelves took on water. In consultation with Munters personnel, we decided to pump out the basement and remove all materials. The records will be shipped out of New Orleans, stored, and treated. My administration intends to locate new, above-ground storage for these records.
Eighteenth, 19th, and early 20th century records are housed in the Notarial Archives Research Center, across the street from the courthouse, on the third floor of what's called 'the old Amoco building.' Pictures of the damage to this facility are available at the following web site: www.ssacares.org. Click on the 'photos' link. On Tuesday, September 6, when the assessment was made, it was determined that the records had an acceptable level of moisture. This was great news to us. It was decided to stabilize the windows and pump in air conditioning to prevent further humidification. Unfortunately, the (privately owned) building's management is resisting this solution. They refuse to allow access to the building for air conditioning and are trying to force us to remove the materials, which in our view would be damaging in and of itself, not to mention extreme"
